The Konmari Method Tidying Up and Organization

This book about the Konmari Method Tidying Up was interesting enough and very familiar in some ways, but magical or life-changing…I’m unsure. Join me on my journey to find out, The Konmari Method Home Organizing Challenge! The Konmari Method the life-changing magic of tidying up, the Japanese art of decluttering and organizing was familiar to me because of some of the techniques written in the book {read further below}. Have you had a change to read it?

Organizing is one of my favorite methods of cleaning, it is also a favorite writing topic! Organizing and labeling is one of the main techniques in planning my home’s function and where our belongings fit. I was intrigued when I saw it in the book section while we were in Japan and I was tempted to buy it but I waited until I had time to read the book reviews on it first. Later that week, I noticed that the book was already on my bookshelf, my husband had purchased it unbeknownst to me.

The Konmari Method – Tidying Up and Organizing

a. Konmari Method Tidying Up by ‘Finish Discarding First’

Throwing away items, recycling, and freshening is one of my favorite things to do every Spring and sometimes the Fall. The Konmari Method Tidying up process has you let go and throw out items to create space and help minimize clutter. I really like this school of thought {above quote} because for most of my married life, it is really hard for some of my family to discard things and sentimental items. Just go for it, it will make less work in the future of this challenge. AND it will make cleaning time super speedy!

b. Konmari Method Tidying Up by ‘Tidying by category works like magic’

Now here is where the magic comes in for The Konmari Method Tidying Up process, tidying by category. This way of thinking was very interesting to try out. You should buy the book and read, maybe even read her 2nd book and see in which way these methods can change your space. Here’s an example that I used in our mudroom. We take our shoes off in our home and since the mudroom has many shoes in it, instead of just organizing the mudroom…organize and tidy all the shoes in the home at once. Categorize them by season, store the ones that are not in use.

c. Konmari Method Tidying Up by ‘Storing your belongs to make your life shine’

Storage and organizing is one of my favorite things to do. The Konmari Method has you re-think what you will be placing in storage. I love this principle {above quote} because for most people they like to display decor and sentimental items in their home because it reminds them of a time in their life or a person special to them. By storing items you ‘need’ then you have more room to show your lovely photos and home decor.

This is where I found some of the techniques in this book familiar. Many times when I see this method in the media, they feature about her {Marie Kondo} folding technique. It was really funny to me that her folding method was what stuck out to people. I already fold my shirts this way in my dresser and even in my children’s draws. Sounded very familiar to me, this is also some of the ways the military tells it’s troops to fold their clothes in the barracks during basic training and during inspections. Yes, there are differences in the space saving techniques but still very similar and familiar {us both being military affiliated.} Yet, I was already folding my shirts this way as a child…I was extremely excited to try on all of my clothes and linens!!!
